Recently, I have been working through a new sketchbook at great speed. The idea is simple, to simply get all of the ideas in my mind out as quickly as possible. One pen, one book, and a thousand ideas. There are no resolved drawings in this book, simply seeds for painting and later work.
The process of sketching can sometimes be so fun you can get completely lost in it. But I try to never give too much time to a sketch. Its just the idea, and a resolved sketch, like a nice photograph, often makes for a lousy painting. If the idea is evident, then I prefer to resolve things on canvas.
From one small drawing, to the larger work. That is the moment of creation. No need for notes, just dig in and watch the form resolve, decision by decision.
